The Haddam Planning & Zoning Commission has failed us once again. On January 5, 2023, they approved the Dollar General application for a 10,700 sq. ft. commercial building on Killingworth Road. I feel for the neighbors and am saddened by the impact this decision will have on our community, small business owners, the surrounding land, traffic implications, and property values.
In both hearings it was made clear that the public unanimously does not want yet another Dollar General in our town. The reason this passed has nothing to do with Dollar General, and everything to do with our regulations and the incompetence of our Commission. The fault lies directly on them, as they did not have the foresight to change our regulations after the first Dollar General went in on Bridge Road. This could have easily been prevented, but the Commission did not want to have that discussion. So, here we are.
Another glaring reality is the Commission’s ignorance toward our POCD. Although our POCD may call for responsible commercial development, it clearly states big box and formula businesses such as this should not be part of our community. The only dissent last night was Gina Block, thankfully the one and only sane voice who respects our POCD and brings sensible thinking to the table. Steve Bull is also one exception. The reason we are here, and will continue to be here, is because of this Commission. The only way to prevent things like this is to vote them out. Thank you.
