Recent testing of wells in the Beechwood Community on Route 81 revealed the presence of PFAS at a level above the Connecticut Drinking Water Action Level of 70 parts per trillion. PFAS are a group of chemicals that accumulate in the body and are thought to be a health risk. Fortunately, Beechwood’s existing water treatment system delivers water with far below that level of PFAS.
However, the Town, the CT Department of Public Health (DPH), and the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) are working to try to identify and address the potential source(s) of the PFAS and determine whether PFAS may be present in other public and private wells in the area. These include wells serving the Haddam Killingworth Intermediate/Middle School, Killingworth Elementary School, the Town Hall/Fire Station/Public Works Garage complex, and the Killingworth Library. Results of the tests typically take two to four weeks. Out of caution, the schools have started using bottled drinking water.
On Thursday, March 25, at 7:00 p.m., the Town will hold an online public forum to provide information about PFAS and the findings in Killingworth. We will have subject matter experts available from the DPH, DEEP, and the Connecticut Water Company, which supplies the water treatment at Beechwood, to answer questions.
We will be using DEEP’s Zoom account. To join the forum:
