Killingworth Copes: October 23, 2020

By Cathy Iino, First Selectman, Killingworth.

Connecticut’s COVID infection rate is rising again. As of yesterday, the state had over 66,000 confirmed cases and a positivity rate–the proportion of positive results among all tests administered–of 2.9 %. A fall surge in cases was not unexpected, and it comes as the United States sets records for the number of new cases in a day. Connecticut continues to have one of the lowest infection rates in the country; Middlesex County has one of the lowest in the state; and Killingworth has one of the lowest rates in the county.
Nice work, Killingworthies. But we are not an island. One more Killingworth case was reported today, and surrounding towns have higher rates. We will continue in relative safety only as long as we protect it. You know the drill: keep your distance; wear masks–even outside; don’t gather in crowds; be aware of your surroundings. Indoors, pay attention to ventilation, spacing of tables and chairs, cleanliness. The regulations are only guidelines. Use your sense.
The safety precautions we have been following have side effects, though, including increased levels of isolation, depression, and anxiety. Please reach out by phone or social media to those you know who might be particularly at risk. In fact, reach out to all of your neighbors, so that we all remember we are part of a community that cares about us.
Drug take-back. Every year, the Healthy Communities/Healthy Kids Coalition runs drug take-back events. Tomorrow is the day (10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.); the Killingworth Pharmacy (183 Route 81) is the place. Make sure prescription and nonprescription drugs do not fall into the wrong hands and lead to tragic consequences.
