Hello, Killingworth–
The Connecticut Department of Public Health yesterday removed several hundred duplicates from the count of COVID-19 cases in the state. That made it seem as if the number of cases had dropped for the first time, but in reality, there were 341 newly confirmed cases. Nevertheless, the numbers continue to trend down. That’s a sign that the measures we’ve all been complaining about are working.
Budget hearing. As you may know, Killingworth’s Annual Town Meeting, at which the town budget is normally voted on, will not take place this year. The “budget-making authority” of the town, the Board of Finance, will set the budget and the mill rate at the beginning of June.
In preparation for those decisions, the Board of Finance will hold a virtual hearing on the budget on Tuesday, June 2, at 7:00 pm. The public will be able to ask questions and make comments on line or by phone.
The proposed budget is
on line and appears in the
Source today, May 28.
A household hazardous waste collection will be held this coming Saturday, May 30, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, at the Essex Transfer Station (Exit 4 off Route 9). As you might expect, the rules are different this year:
* Bring your face mask with you.
* Load all household hazardous waste in your car’s trunk or the back of a pick-up. Workers will remove it as you stay in the driver’s seat; they will not remove it from a rear seat.
* Call (860) 581-8554 by Friday if you have questions about what is accepted.
* Please do not bring passengers or pets.
* Stay in your car.
* Be prepared to show your driver’s license through your window. If your license does not carry a Killingworth address, bring a piece of mail that shows your local address.
* Stay in your car. Bring a cell phone in case you need to communicate with staff at the collection site.
Check
here for this year’s schedule of hazardous waste collections (and paper shredding events), a list of items that you may bring there, and directions.
Compost bin and rain barrel sale. RiverCOG–our local council of governments, which runs the hazardous waste collections–is also offering compost bins, rain barrels, and related accessories for purchase at a reduced rate. (If you placed an order earlier this spring, delivery has been postponed until July 18.) You can place a new order here until July 16. Fewer trips to the dump! Good for your garden! You may choose to pick up your order on Saturday, July 18 at one of two locations: Middletown’s Veteran’s Memorial Park, 9:00 – 11:00 am, or Old Saybrook’s Tractor Supply, 401 Middlesex Turnpike, 1:00 – 3:00 pm.
Local experts. Killingworth residents Laura and Andre Marozsan, both biologists (and parents of an incredibly cute baby), are publishing a
blog on “the state of the COVID-19 pandemic from a virologist’s and scientist’s perspective.” Andre is a virologist who has published in over 30 scientific journals. “There is so much misinformation out there, and we would like to help people understand what is really going on with virus,” says Laura.
Stay safe and carry on!
