[In Case You Missed It] last week, Rep. Joe Courtney (CT-02) introduced new legislation to provide relief to millions of American student loan borrowers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Courtney’s new bill, the COVID-19 Student Loan Relief Extension Act, would extend COVID-19 student loan forbearance relief until 30 days after the end of the declared Public Health Emergency. It would also retroactively extend these benefits to previously excluded borrowers. There are approximately 8 million borrowers with commercially held FFEL and Perkins loans alone, and only Congress has the authority to pause principal and interest payments for these federal programs.
On Sunday, Wesley Whistle, Senior Contributor at Forbes, covered Rep. Courtney’s new bill in an article titled, Lawmaker Proposes Expansion Of Student Loan Relief. In it, Whistle writes that the new bill “could provide additional months of relief to millions of student loan borrowers,” and that Rep. Courtney’s proposal would “help the vast majority of student loan borrowers.”
