(September 4, 2023) — This month, Haddam Volunteer Fire Company welcomed Probationary Member James Brochu to the department.

James grew up in the Hidden Lake section of Higganum before moving to Middletown.

“I always wondered what it would be like to join the fire service,” James said. “I had several friends and classmates who were members of Westfield and one night, I decided to stop in and fill out the application.”

James immediately registered for the Firefighter I course, which is required for most volunteer firefighters in Connecticut. He also took the Firefighter II course and stayed with Westfield Fire Dept. several years before moving out of district.

Four years ago, James returned to his hometown of Higganum and currently resides with his girlfriend and two-year-old daughter. The family also is expecting a baby boy in September.

“I am excited to not only be back in town permanently, but to be able to once again serve in the fire service for Haddam.”
