(January 15, 2023)–This month, Haddam Volunteer Fire Company welcomed its fourth Junior Division member—Evan Estelle—to HVFC’s roster. Evan was sworn into the company on Jan. 2.

The HVFC Junior Division is comprised of 14- to 17-year-old cadets who learn alongside firefighters and perform support functions at calls. The company accepts up to 10 Junior members at any given time. Juniors receive training, protective turnout gear, and are eligible to participate in the Introduction to the Fire Service course at the Connecticut Fire Academy.

On Jan. 7, Evan joined fellow Junior members and Probationary members for a SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) training at Station One. SCBA provides firefighters protection from inhaling harmful particulates in an IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health) environment.

Although Junior members train with the use of SCBA, they are never permitted to enter any IDLH environment. This training, along with many other aspects of firefighter training, provides them with valuable skills that they will need should they decide to join the company’s regular membership upon turning 18.

Anyone between the ages of 14-17 may apply for Junior Division membership and have the same training opportunities Evan is currently experiencing. For more information email membership@haddamfire.org.
