HVFC Responds: Brush Fire and Smoke Investigation

By Olivia Drake, HVFC Public Information Officer.
Haddam Volunteer Fire Company responded to a brush fire at 7:40 p.m. on May 23, 2022 behind a residence on Killingworth Road. Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke coming from a wooded area near Saltpeter Brook. Firefighters filled portable water tanks, crossed the brook, and worked to extinguish the fire with water and rakes.
At 8:40 a.m. this morning, May 24, HVFC was dispatched to Route 9 North for a smoke investigation between Exits 9 and 10. Crews determined the smoke was coming from an outside wood furnace at a residence.
According to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, Connecticut traditionally experiences high forest fire danger in the spring from mid-March through May. In an average year, approximately 500 acres of Connecticut woodland are burned by forest fires.
