HK Cougars traveled to the New Hartford Wolverines to open the season on Sunday, September 8, 2019.

The Cougars A Squad’s offense was impressive, scoring 4 times in the first half with 3 running and 1 receiving touchdowns. The Cougars defense dominated, holding their opponents to a single scoring drive.   Unfortunately, the game will go down in the books as a forfeit with a 7-0 win for HK, since the Wolverines did not have enough eligible players. The Cougars started the season off strong and will face a tough East Hartford team next Sunday.

HK B squad defense held New Hartford to 207 yards but ultimately was too much to handle, losing the tough game 20-6.  New Hartford drove down the field on their first drive to go up 7-0.  HK ended up throwing an interception on their first drive to allow New Hartford to go up 14-0 at half time. HK drove the ball 51 yards to start the second half but ended up fumbling the ball at New Hartford’s 16 yard line. HK B squad never gave up and the defense stopped New Hartford to get the ball back for the offense. HK put another long drive together and ended up in the end zone to put 6 on the scoreboard.  New Hartford running game was tough for the Cougars defense to handle and New Hartford scored their final touchdown to end the game, 20-6. The Cougars offense had 200 yards on the day with 8 different players helping for that yardage. Final score New Hartford 20 HK 6.

#34 Tim Hickman of C squad catches a pass

In a defensive battle, New Hartford would take a 7-0 lead at halftime over the HK C squad. The Cougars would close the gap late in the 3rd quarter with a 3 yard run by quarterback Lucas Norko. After a failed conversion, the score remained 6-7 heading into the 4th quarter. In a battle against the clock, HK would put one last drive together but would run out of time deep in wolverine territory. The cougars were led offensively by Lucas Norko 5-8 56 yards passing. Tim Hickman grabbed three of those passes for 46 yards and Trevor Powell also caught a pass for 17 yards. The defensive unit was led by Noah Soucie, Hickman, Kyle House, Evan Vincent, Evan O’Neal and a host of other Cougar tacklers. Final score New Hartford 7 HK 6.

The HK Cougars D Squad traveled north to face the Bloomfield Raiders D Squad at Bloomfield High School. The offense, orchestrated by Jacob House (#92), came out strong behind a big performance from Isaac Edwards (#36), who accumulated 4 TD’s on the day. Michael Hardgrove (#21) converted the extra points on 3 of the 4 Td’s. The offensive line play anchored by Arlo Downing (#29), Jaxon Frith (#73), and Jaden Donkor (#79) kept Edwards and Hardgrove running free through the Raiders defense. The Cougars defense was stingy for the entirety of the contest behind strong performances from Dane Rich (#35) from his linebacker position, and Maddox McNamara (#62) from his tackle position. With a final score of HK Cougars 27 and Bloomfield Raiders 0, the Cougars D squad is off to a strong start on the season. The Cougars will look to build on their strong performance this Sunday against the Durham Falcons.
