(April 22, 2024) — Despite a streak of losses for the Haddam-Killingworth High School Girls Lacrosse team, this group put their hearts and charity to the test.
On April 19, 2024, HK and Mercy both wore royal blue ribbons in their hair as symbols of support for and to raise awareness of child abuse prevention. As you may be aware, April is Child Abuse Prevention month and, as such, the stands were blued-out as a symbol of allegiance in the fight to end child abuse.
Why blue? some might ask. The “Blue Ribbon” is a symbol of Bonnie Finney’s story and mission to end child abuse. She tied a blue ribbon to the antenna of her van as a way to remember her grandson and to alert her community to the tragedy of child abuse. In Bonnie’s own words, “The blue ribbon serves as a constant reminder to fight for protection of our children. Please wear a blue ribbon. Put one on your car. Give one to your friends. Tell them what it means. You could save a child’s life!”
Additionally, blue pinwheels were placed around the field as a symbol of hope. “The pinwheel represents childhood innocence, unseen energy, wish fulfillment and transformation. Some cultures believe the pinwheel is an instrument that turns obstacles into opportunities.”
At their game on April 19th, the HKHS Girls turned their obstacles into an opportunity to give back and help aid in raising awareness and prevention of child abuse. You can join us in continuing to make a difference by visiting ctchildrensalliance.org
