HK Rec Dept: Summer 2019 Specialty Camps

Curious Campers Pre-School Camp

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Dept. is offering a pre-school camp for children ages 4 – entering K (children must turn 4 by 12/31/19). Arts and crafts, games, story time, special projects and outside play will be featured in the mini-camp designed for pre-schoolers. Please bring a bathing suit for sprinkler use, towel, and sunscreen. A snack will be provided. The program meets Monday – Friday from 9:00 – 12:00 pm HK Central Office Room A-127. The fee is $75 each session. Non-residents may register for an additional $10. The sessions are as follows:

Session 1:                   “Rainforest Adventure” July 8 – 12, 2019

Session 2:                   “Creative Campers” July 15 – 19, 2019

Session 3:                   “All Holidays” July 22 – 26, 2019

Session 4:                   “Hawaiian Luau” July 29 – Aug. 2, 2019

Aspiring Young Engineers

Explore the fascinating world of “S.T.E.A.M.” through the hands-on, minds-on, unique summer camps offered by Engineering Imagination! Camp is for boys and girls entering grades K-6 and meets Monday – Friday, June 24 – June 28 from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the HKHS Lower Media Center. The fee is $160 (non-res. add $10).

In these exciting, educational summer camps, participants will use a variety of mediums such as such as LEGO, ESTES, KEVA, and recycled materials to learn about, plan, and build such as water wheels, model rockets, bridges and roller coasters! With activities and topics including mechanical engineering, chemical reactions, reverse engineering, and environmental science, participants are sure to have a blast while learning along the way. In addition, participants will take home some of the projects they complete such as model rockets, reverse-engineered devices, and 3-D architectural models. Kids will be separated by age.

Young Chefs Cooking Camp

Young Chefs is a unique culinary experience, which offers cooking classes to children in a safe environment that will encourage discovery and creativity. Students sharpen their skills by employing the mantra “Mise en Place” which translates into “Everything in its Place.” Young chefs will learn the basics in kitchen safety, proper food handling, food preparation, cooking, baking techniques, presentation and so much more! This camp will capture children’s imagination, entertain their senses, stretch their learning, and be tons of FUN! Each day will feature hands-on cooking, skills practice and tasting. Some of the featured recipes include yogurt bagels, s’more pops, truffles, sticky buns/pizza dough. This camp promises to provide unbeatable, hands-on activities to entertain your kids. This camp is for boys and girls entering grades 1 – 5 and meets on Monday – Thursday, July 8 – 11 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at HK HS Room B-112. The fee is $128 (includes food) (non-res. add $10).

Casablanca’s Modeling/Fashion camp

John Casablanca’s Modeling and Fashion Camp provides children with knowledge of looking like a model, developing their etiquette skills for any setting, feeling good about themselves, perfecting who they are inside and out and tapping into their fashion talents. Design your own t-shirt and show it off at the end of the week. Each day will consist of fun-filled activities such as Makeover Monday, T-shirt Tuesday, Wanna Be Famous Wednesday, Time to Say Cheese Thursday and Fashion Show Friday. Camp is for boys and girls ages 5 and up and meets Monday – Friday from July 8 – 12 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the HKHS Lower Media. The fee is $110 (non-res. add $10).

Play-Well STEM & Harry Potter LEGOTM Camp

This camp meets Monday – Friday, July 15 – July 19 from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the HKHS Lower Media Center. The fee is $222. (non-residents add $10). Please bring a PB free lunch.

Prepare for a full-day LEGO® camp packed with hands-on and minds-on STEM fun! Build projects inspired by cool machines close to home, such as Trains, Helicopters, Treehouses, and Beam Bridges. Then find Platform 9 ¾, build Hogwarts Express Train, and challenge the Hungarian Horntail Dragon! Engineering & Wizardry are the focus of this new themed camp for LEGO® fanatics!

Summer Art Camp

Explore a world of creativity where children will make a variety of projects, from crafts to paper art and much more! Each day of the week will have a different theme! Come and use your imagination to make art work you will cherish. And don’t forget: bring a snack, and bring a smock that can get messy. Camp is for boys and girls in grades 1 – 5 and meets Monday – Friday from July 22 – 26 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the HKHS Art Room. The fee is $118 (non-res. add $10).

Rockets & Other Flying Apparatuses

Design and build your own rocket, then launch it with compressed air! This course demonstrates the basics of aeronautics, including thrust, drag and ballast. This class involves discussions of how we use air to move objects and how air aides in transportation. Class will include rockets, airplanes, helicopters and hot air balloons. Please bring in an empty soda bottle (20 ounce). No water bottles. Please bring a snack. This camp is for boys and girls ages 5 – 12 and meets Tuesday – Friday, July 9 – 12 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the HKHS Lower Media. The fee is $103 (non-residents add $10).

Silly Science

Come join your friends and have fun with silly experiments. This class has experiments you’ll love like making super balls, testing your strength with jelly fish, or your agility with egg experiments. Each day a different theme experiment is worked on. Class is broken down into groups and experiments are done by the children. Please bring a snack. Notify instructor of any allergies. Safety glasses will be provided during class. This camp is for boys and girls ages 5 – 12 and meets Tuesday – Friday, August 6 – 9 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the HKHS Lower Media. The fee is $103 (non-residents add $10).
