HK Rec Dept: Fall 2019 Programs & Activities

Messy Mondays

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering a program for children ages 1.5 – 4 years this fall. This program offers the opportunity to meet other parents and toddlers in a playgroup atmosphere. Your child will have fun getting messy. Experiment with different textural materials such as shaving cream, goop, finger paints, play-dough, and more! Parents – leave the mess to us. This is a great social experience for both you and your toddler. The program meets Mondays at the HK Old MS Room A-117 from 10:00 – 10:45 am from November 4 – December 9 (No 11/11). The fee is $50 / $35 siblings each session. (non-residents add $10).

Nature Class Experience

Turkey Gander – Learn about turkeys by examining their feathers, footprints, and listening to the sounds they make. Go outside and search for turkeys, (weather permitting), and take home a turkey craft.This program is for children ages 1 – 4 and meets on Wednesday, November 20 from 10:00 – 11:00 am in the HK Old MS A-117. The fee is $22 / $17 2nd child and HK Cubs.

Pee Wee Soccer

The HK Recreation Department is offering Pee Wee Soccer for boys and girls ages 3-4. Pre-Schoolers will learn the basic fundamentals of soccer with some fun drills, skills and small sided games. This program will be held on Wednesdays, November 6 – December 11 (No 11/27) at Burr Elementary School Gym from 3:45 – 4:45 pm. The fee is $65 (non-residents add $10).

Gymnastics

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering gymnastics this fall for students in grades K – 5. Classes will be held on Tuesdays, October 29 – November 26 (No 11/5) at Burr Elementary School and on Fridays, November 8 – December 6 (No 11/29) at Killingworth Elementary School. Class will be from 3:30 – 4:30 pm. The fee is $77. Non-residents please add $10.

Students will be introduced to basic floor tumbling as well as some apparatus use. They will work on front rolls, back rolls, cartwheels, handstands and bridges. They will learn to walk front and back on the balance beam as well as hops, skips, and little jumps.

Zumba Kids

The Zumba Kids program is the ultimate dance-fitness party for young Zumba fans where they can play it loud and rock with friends to their own rules! This program features age appropriate music and moves that will get kids movin’ to the beat. Session 2 will be November 7 –December 19 (No 11/28) at Burr Elementary School. The fee is $60 each session (non-residents add $10) and meets from 3:30 – 4:30 pm.

Science Outreach

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department has the Children’s Museum of SE CT coming to HK. These programs are a mix of science demonstration and hands-on activities for boys and girls ages 3 – 5 and boys and girls in grades K-5. The fee is $22 each session. (non – res. add $5)

Electricity – In this sizzling program, explore the power of electricity! Students will become part of a Human Circuit, use fruit to complete a circuit, and use Snap Circuits to make a light glow, rotate a fan or start a motor! This workshop will be held on Wednesday, November 6 at the HK Old Middle School room A-117 from 1:15 – 2:00 pm. There will also be a workshop for Boys and Girls in grades K-5, Wednesday, November 6 at Burr Elementary School and on Thursday, November 7 at Killingworth Elementary School from 3:30 – 4:15 pm.

Creative Art

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Creative Art classes this fall. Children in grades K – 5 will explore a world of creativity through a variety of different projects from wood crafts to paper art and make fun projects. Each session will also have a day of cookie decorating! Class will meet on Tuesdays from 3:30 – 4:45 pm at Burr Elementary School from October 22 – November 19. The class will also meet on Thursdays, November 7 – December 5 at Killingworth Elementary. The fee is $50 per each four-week session (non-residents add $10). Kids should bring a smock or shirt that can get messy.

Canvas and Cupcakes (Parent/Kid Paint Night)

Unleash your inner Picasso in this unique adult/child paint night workshop. This is a fun way for you and your child to have a fun night out with friends, create a painting, and enjoy a treat. No prior experience necessary. Fee includes all supplies. This Workshop is for children ages 6 and up with an adult on Friday, November 15 at the Haddam Killingworth High School Cafeteria from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. The fee is $65 per adult/child pair. Non-Residents please add $10.

Straw-chitecture

The HK Recreation Department is offering Straw – chitecture this Fall. What can you do with straws, popsicle sticks, toothpicks and tape? Attempt to solve customized architectural challenges! Given specific quantities of materials, participants will need to use architectural and engineering techniques as well as their creativity and imagination to accomplish architectural challenges using only straws, toothpicks and popsicle sticks! The program meets from 3:30 – 5:00 pm. The fee is $22 each session (non-res. add $5).

  • Session 1: Tuesday, November 19 at Killingworth Elementary School, Room 14
  • Session 2: Friday, November 22 at Burr Elementary School Library

Archery 

This beginner program will include the proper form, vocabulary, and techniques of utilizing and performing Archery. Also included is some historical information toward archery and the different styles of archery throughout various cultures. Learn background information towards creating and shaping your own bows. Individual Equipment will be provided. Session 2 will be offered October 30 – December 4 (No 11/27). The fee is $65 each session (non-residents add $10) and meets from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Paint & Play

Discover your inner artist through painting viewed as play! This program is designed to encourage individual expression and inspire creativity while providing the child with an opportunity to explore painting. Join artist, Christine Miller, as she guides and encourages your child’s creative spirit to shine! All materials are included and your child will bring home a finished masterpiece!

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department will be hosting a workshop for children ages 7- 12 on Wednesday, November 6 at Killingworth Elementary School from 3:30 – 5:30 PM. The fee is $42. Non-residents can register for an additional $5.

Young Chefs of HK

The HK Recreation Department is offering some fun cooking classes this fall. Young Chefs is for boys and girls in grades 1 – 5. It meets from 4:15 – 5:45 pm at the HK HS B-112. The fee is $28 each class (non-residents add $5). It is a unique culinary experience which will offer cooking classes to children in a safe environment that will encourage discovery and creativity. Each visit will be a new experience with fresh monthly themes and exciting new programs. Students sharpen their skills by employing the mantra, “Mise en Place” which, in the cooking world, translates into “Everything in its place.” Young chefs will learn basics in kitchen safety, proper food handling, food preparation, cooking and baking techniques, presentation, and so much more! At the end of each workshop, the young chef will leave with a packet of info on how to recreate what we made in class and tasty treats for their family to try.

Workshops include:
November 6 – gear up for Thanksgiving this month and make turkey cookie treats. We will start the class by making pumpkin muffins and while they bake we will create delicious edible turkeys.

Circuits & More Snap Circuits

Love science and building? This class will intrigue your child about the world of science while investigating how to create snap circuits. Discussion of what makes a circuit and some battery experiments will be included in this class. This class is designed for all ages if attended previous year you can start with our 1.5 version. Please bring a snack. No materials will be taken home. Please provide a snack.The program meets from 3:30 – 5:00 pm. The fee is $103 each session (non-residents add $10).

Babysitter’s Training Course

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering the American Red Cross Babysitting Course. Class will meet Mondays, November 18 – December 2 from 5:45 – 7:45 pm and will be held in the HK Lower Media Center. The fee is $75 and includes a Red Cross Babysitting Manual and Certificate. Non-residents please add $10.

There will be a CPR for Babysitters session on Monday and Wednesday, November 4 & 6 from 5:45 – 7:45 pm at the HK Lower Media Center. The fee is $55 (non-residents add $10). Must have taken the Babysitter’s Training class in order to take the CPR section.

The course is for students ages 10 – 15, and is designed to prepare them for babysitting.

This American Red Cross Program has been updated to include Basic Child Care, First Aid for breathing and bleeding emergencies, and injury prevention as well as covering other important topics to prepare young adults for babysitting. Students will not become certified in CPR or 1st Aid, but will gain knowledge. This class is an excellent opportunity to help students build self-confidence as well as job leadership, and decision-making skills.

When I’m in Charge

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering the American Red Cross “When I’m in Charge” class this fall. Class will be held on Wednesday, November 20 from 5:45 – 7:45 pm at the HK HS Lower Media Center. The fee is $26. Non-residents please add $5. The course is for students ages 9 and up, and is designed to teach kids how to be responsible when at home. Topics include internet safety, gun safety, family communications, sibling care, basic emergency care & confidence building.

Children’s Swim Lessons 

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Swim Lessons for children. Classes are conducted at the HK High School Pool. Lessons meet Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings. Session 3 & 4 is from November 12 – December 10, 2019. Children’s Swim Lessons (ages 4 and up) is from 6:00 – 6:40 p.m. or 6:50 – 7:30 p.m. The fee is $75 / $60 with pool membership. Non resident please add $10. $5 Sibling discount.

Adult Semi-Private Swim Lessons 

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Adult Semi-Private Swim Lessons at the HK High School Pool. Learn the basics including treading water, floating and stroke development such as crawl, breast, side and back.

Session 3 will be November 12 – December 10 (No 11/28). The fee is $75/$60 with a pool membership.

Zumba

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Zumba this fall! Session 2 will be held on Mondays from November 4 – December 16 (No 11/11). The fee is $42. Non-residents can register for an additional $10. Drop-in and try a class for $10.

Zumba is Latin inspired dance/fitness craze sweeping the world. Fusing hypnotic Latin and other international rhythms with easy-to-follow moves, Zumba is a one-of-a-kind dance fitness class designed to burn calories and get your energy pumping. There are no complicated moves to learn and you don’t need the coordination of a pro. Zumba is not only great for the body, but is also great for the mind. It’s a “feel happy” workout. Stretching, abs and toning will also be added. Join the party!

Pallet Painting

Enjoy rustic crafting this Fall with Abby Rines. You will be guided through the process of painting your own pallet sign. Includes unique stencil, a 16″ x 20″ pallet stained with your color choice, & paint supplies. Choose from 40+ options or customize your own design! This program will meet Friday, November 8 from 6:00 -9:00 PM in the Haddam Killingworth High School Cafeteria. Register by 11/3 to secure your design. The fee is $57. Non-residents can register for an additional $10.

It’s About Life

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering everything you need to know about making funeral plans. This workshop will be held Thursday, November 14 from 6:30 -7:30 PM. The fee is $10. Non-residents can register for an additional $5.
