Nature Class Experience
The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering a New Program this winter. Nature Class Experience will take your children through fun educational experiences with animals. March 10 will feature Millipedes. The presentation is hands-on, interactive, educational and entertaining. The program is for boys and girls ages 1- 4 years old and meets from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the HK Central Office A-117. The fee is $22 each / $17 2nd child (non-residents add $5).
Messy Mondays
The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering a program for children ages 18 mos. – 4 years old. This program offers the opportunity to meet other parents and toddlers in a playgroup atmosphere. Your child will have fun getting messy. Experiment with different textural materials such as shaving cream, goop, finger paints, play-dough, and more! Parents – leave the mess to us. This is a great social experience for both you and your toddler. The program meets Mondays at the HK Central Office Room A-117 from 10:00 – 10:45 a.m. from March 23 – April 27 (No 4/6). The fee is $50 / $35 siblings each session. (Non-residents add $10).
Pee Wee Soccer
The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Indoor Soccer for boys and girls ages 3 – 4. The program is being held on Wednesdays, 3:45 – 4:45 p.m. at Burr Elementary School Gym from March 4 – April 1 or April 29 – May 27. The fee is $70 each session. Non-residents may register for an additional $10. Pre-schoolers will learn the basic fundamentals of soccer with some fun drills, skills, and small-sided games. Please wear sneakers and shin guards. Conducted by UK International Soccer Camps.
Skyhawks Basketball (Gr. K-1)
The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering an Introductory Basketball for kids in Gr. K and 1 this winter. Skyhawks basketball breaks down this exhilarating sport into fundamental skills that all athletes, no matter their skill level, need to succeed. Coaches will lead the athletes through fun games and exercises, focusing on ball handling, passing, shooting and defense. There is no pressure — just lots of fun while these young athletes participate through unique Skyhawks games. Our coaching staff is trained to meet the specific needs of young children and is committed to helping them start off on the right foot as they venture into athletics. This program will be held on Thursday, March 12 – April 16 (4/9) from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. (Gr. 1) and from 4:45 – 5:45 p.m. (K) at Burr Elementary School. The fee is $79 for Session 3 (non-residents add $10).
Indoor Soccer
The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Indoor Soccer for boys and girls in grades K – 3. The program is being held on Mondays at Killingworth Elementary School gym from March 23 – May 4 (No 4/6), from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. The fee is $75 each session. Creative Art
The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Creative Art classes this winter. Children in grades K – 4 will explore a world of creativity through a variety of different projects from wood crafts to paper art and make fun projects. Each session will also have a day of cookie decorating! Class will meet on Tuesdays from 3:30 – 4:45 p.m. at Killingworth Elementary School from March 3 – March 31 (No 3/10) and April 28 – May 19. The class will meet on Thursdays at Burr Elementary from April 2– April 30 (No 4/9) and May 14 – June 4. The fee is $50 per each four-week session (non-residents add $10). Kids should bring a smock or shirt that can get messy.
Gymnastics
The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering gymnastics this winter for students in grades K – 4. Classes will be held on Tuesdays, March 3 – March 31 at Burr Elementary School from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. and on Fridays, March 6 – March 27 at Killingworth Elementary School from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. The fee is $77. Non-residents please add $10.
Students will be introduced to basic floor tumbling as well as some apparatus use. They will work on front rolls, back rolls, cartwheels, handstands and bridges. They will learn to walk front and back on the balance beam as well as hops, skips, and little jumps.
Running Rams — Strength & Conditioning
This program will introduce children to the fun and satisfaction of running. Coach Pete is the Track and Field Coach at OSHS and has been coaching kids in running for over 10 years. A fantastic and fun way to condition before the outdoor season! The program will run March 9 – 30 at HK Middle School Gym. The fee is $85 each session (non-residents add $10) and meets from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.
Archery
This beginner program will include the proper form, vocabulary, and techniques of utilizing and performing Archery. Also included is some historical information toward archery and the different styles of archery throughout various cultures. Learn background information towards creating and shaping your own bows. Individual Equipment will be provided. Session 1 will run March 4 – April 1 at HK High School Auxiliary Gym. A second session will be offered April 29 – May 27. The fee is $65 each session (non-residents add $10) and meets from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Chemical Reactions & Then Some
Join this fun class as we experiment with reactions to various products we use every day, such as milk, baking soda, baking powder, vinegar, salt, latex, sugar or cleaning products. Some experiments include the rocket blaster, gak, tornado, lava lamp and the blob. Children will be provided with gloves and safety goggles. Please bring a snack to class. The program meets from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. The fee is $103 each session (non-residents add $10).

Science Outreach
The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department has the Children’s Museum of SE CT coming to HK. These programs are a mix of science demonstration and hands-on activities for boys and girls ages 3-5 and boys and girls in grades K-3. The fee is $22 each session (non-res. add $5)
- Seed to Plant – Dissect a seed to find the baby plant and take a journey through its life cycle (seed germination, growth, flowering, pollination and seed dispersal). Look at plant parts using our Root Tank and discuss plant needs as you plant something of your own.
This workshop will be held on Wednesday, March 25 at the HK Central Office room A-117 from 1:15 – 2:00 p.m. for preschoolers. There will also be a workshop for Boys and Girls in grades K-3, Wednesday, March 25 at Burr Elementary School and on Thursday, March 26 at Killingworth Elementary school from 3:30-4:15 p.m.
Guitar With Charles
The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Guitar with Charles this winter. This exciting 6 week long class is led by a professional guitar teacher. Charles has been playing guitar for 34 years and has 19 years of professional teaching experience. Students will learn how to read music, play cords, strumming techniques, learn the names of the strings, how to play scales, how to hold the guitar correctly, how to position both the left and right hands, how to count beats, how to play in time, how to read tablature and much more. If you are a beginner looking for an affordable program, than this is it! Guitar purchase available if needed for $45. Class will be held on Mondays, March 30– May 11 (No 4/6) at the Haddam-Killingworth Old Middle School from 4:30– 5:30 p.m. The fee is $65 (non-residents add $10).
Wrestling & Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. This program is for boys and girls in grades 5 and up. Wrestling will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:15 – 6:15 p.m. and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:15 – 7:15 p.m. at the HK Middle School (Small Court) from March 10 – June 4 (No 4/7, 4/9) the fee is $180 for each class or $240 for both classes (non-residents add $10). - Wrestling – Learn the skills and develop the mental and physical toughness you need to excel your wrestling game. All practices will have a component of learning and drilling techniques to become a smarter and more technical wrestler. Athletes will finish with live wrestling and high-paced drills to get the mind and body tough for upcoming matches. This is a great opportunity for local wrestlers to meet and practice under high school coaches. This is also a great opportunity for new wrestlers to try it out, without committing to an entire season.
- Brazilian Jiu Jitsu- This class is a grappling-based martial art that is fun in sport but also very useful in the act of self-defense. Participants will work hands-on with fellow members to learn a variety of techniques from submission holds to take downs. Every class will have a component of learning and drilling techniques, as well as live training where members can practice freely. Jiu Jitsu is physically challenging but is also accommodating to all fitness levels and is great for the mind and body. Whether you are new to Jiu Jitsu or have trained for years, have no sport experience or are in the best shape of your life, this program is for you.
Babysitter’s CPR Class
The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering the American Red Cross CPR for Babysitters. The will class will meet on Monday and Wednesday, March 9 & 11 from 5:45 – 7:45 p.m. at the HKHS Lower Media Center. The fee is $55 (non-residents add $10). Participants must have taken the Babysitter’s Training class in order to take the CPR section.
Paint & Stay (GR. 4 & 5)
Discover your inner artist through painting viewed as play! This program is designed to encourage individual expression and inspire creativity while providing the child with an opportunity to explore painting. Join artist, Christine Miller, as she guides and encourages your child’s creative spirit to shine! All materials included and your child will bring home a finished masterpiece. No experience necessary. This Workshop is for boys & girls in grade 4 and 5 on March 12 at the High School IS Room D006 from 3:45 – 5:45 p.m. The fee is $42. Non-Residents please add $5.
When I’m in Charge
The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering the American Red Cross “When I’m in Charge” class this winter/spring. Class will be held on Thursday, March 12 from 5:45 – 7:45 p.m. at the HK HS Lower Media Center. The fee is $26. Non-residents please add $5. The course is for students ages 9 and up, and is designed to teach kids how to be responsible when at home. Topics include internet safety, gun safety, family communications, sibling care, basic emergency care & confidence building.
Canvas and Cupcakes (Parent/Child Paint Night)
Unleash your inner Picasso in this unique adult/child paint night workshop. This is a fun way for you and your child to have a fun night out with friends, create a painting, and enjoy a treat. No prior experience necessary. Fee includes all supplies. This Workshop is for children ages 6 and up on March 20 at the High School Cafeteria from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. The fee is $65 per adult/child pair. Non-Residents please add $10.
Zumba
The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Zumba. The session will be held from March 16 – April 27 (No 4/6). The fee is $42 each session. Non-residents can register for an additional $10. Participants can drop-in to a class for $10.
Zumba is Latin inspired dance/fitness craze sweeping the world. Fusing hypnotic Latin and other international rhythms with easy-to-follow moves, Zumba is a one-of-a-kind dance fitness class designed to burn calories and get your energy pumping. There are no complicated moves to learn and you don’t need the coordination of a pro. Zumba is not only great for the body, but is also great for the mind. It’s a “feel happy” workout. Stretching, abs and toning will also be added. Join the party!
Canine Encounters-Dog Obedience
The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Dept. is offering Basic Dog Obedience class this Spring. Class will be held on Thursdays, March 12 – April 16 from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. (Dogs ages 5 months and up). Class will be held at Parmelee Farm. The fee is $98. Non-residents please add $10. The 1st class is theory and is for owners only and will meet in the HKHS Lower Media).
Canine Encounters teaches dog owners how to teach their dogs. Classes provide socialization through a group setting and enhance the relationship between owner and dog through the partnership which is developed through training. Communication, positive reinforcement, repetition, consistency, and timing are combined to establish bonding and skills. The basic commands such as sit, stay/wait, down, heel, the recall (come when called), and stand are taught in a positive and fun atmosphere. The goal is not a controlled pet but rather a well-mannered, enjoyable and loved companion that is included in our lives.
Adult/Child CPR, AED, & First Aid
This American Red Cross Program will teach you how to respond to a breathing or cardiac emergency for an Adult or Child. Participants will become certified in Adult and Child CPR as well as AED and First Aid upon completion of the class. This class also satisfies the requirements or CT Childcare providers.
This class meets on Monday, March 23 and Wednesday, March 25 from 5:45 -7:45 p.m. at the HK HS Lower Media Center. The Fee for this program is $55 (non-res. Add $10).
Basic Boating Safety Class
The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering the CT Basic Boating Safety Class for participants ages 12 and up on Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 12, 17 & 19. Classes will be held at the HK Middle School Cafeteria from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. The fee is $15 for residents of Haddam and Killingworth and $20 for non-residents. This 10-hour D.E.E.P. course includes instruction in navigation rules, legal requirements, safety afloat and other topics that will help students become safe and knowledgeable boaters. Students passing the course will satisfy the requirements for the CT Safe Boating Certificate and Certificate of Personal Watercraft Operation.
Indoor Pickleball
Indoor Pickleball is back by popular demand. Indoor Pickleball is a racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. The game (most similar to tennis) has 4 players on a court 1/3 the size of a tennis court. Solid paddles made of composite materials that are used to hit a perforated polymer ball, similar to a whiffle ball, over a net. Have fun playing while exercising your mind & body. Equipment provided or bring your own paddle. The program will meet on Wednesdays, March 18 – May 6 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Killingworth Elementary School All Purpose Room. The fee is $35 and non-residents can register for an additional $5.
“Come Play in the Mud” Pottery
In this adult level introduction to pottery class, learn simple hand building techniques, allowing you to express yourself by making a wide variety of pottery forms. The first 4 classes will focus on construction techniques and creation of forms. On week 5 you will be glazing your work, and week 6 will bring us a critique of your finished projects and celebration.
The program will meet on Tuesdays, March 3 – April 14 (no 4/7). from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Haddam-Killingworth High School. The fee is $165 each session (non-residents add $10).
