HK Players to Present Livestreamed: Working, a Musical

Submitted by Marcy Webster.

The H-K Players are thrilled to be back on stage for their spring musical, Working, on May 7 and 8, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. The show is being performed live on stage but is exclusively live streamed through the online ticket purveyor, ShowTix4U: https://www.showtix4u.com/event-details/49368

Based on Studs Terkel’s best-selling book of interviews with American workers, Working paints a vivid portrait of the men and women that the world so often takes for granted: the schoolteacher, the phone operator, the waitress, the millworker, the mason and the housewife, just to name a few. Nominated for six Tony Awards, this classic has been updated for a modern age, featuring new songs by Tony Award-winning Lin-Manuel Miranda, as well as favorites by Stephen Schwartz, Craig Carnelia and James Taylor.

This spring’s musical is the third show the H-K Players have produced this school year. In the fall the show went online for their original murder mystery, It’s Virtually a Murder Mystery. In January class of 2021 student Adelaide Hawkins directed a one-act play, Check, Please! With Covid on the decline and the school opening up full-time, the decision was made to plan to perform this show live and stream it out. Students will wear masks on stage and follow protocols to keep everyone safe while also producing the best possible quality show they can.

How do the kids feel about the show? Senior Stage Manager Joe Wolf has this to say, “We are so glad to be back in school and working on a musical again! I am glad that we got to do an in-person show before I graduate in June.” Senior actress Mia Rubino adds, “It’s been really great to be back together. I think the show is going to be amazing!” Freshman Ella Cawley added, “H-K Drama is great! All the kids are so nice and we have made a lot of great memories together.”

The musical is appropriate for all ages and runs under two hours with no intermission. We hope that streaming the event will enable friends and family from around the world to tune in to enjoy the show and support the students’ hard work.
