(September 7, 2022) —The Haddam Sustainability Committee will hold its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, September 28, 2022. The public is invited to attend and hear our featured speaker, Middletown Recycling Director Kim O’Rourke, who has led the City’s recycling, composting and waste reduction efforts since 1991, managing, planning and directing educational campaigns, coordinating community projects and moving Middletown toward a Zero Waste goal.
Middletown has been recognized on CT DEEP’s Municipal Recycling Honor Roll. Kim has been honored to receive several awards, including the Environmental Professional Award from the CT River Coastal Conservation District, the Outstanding Municipal Recycler Award from the CT Recyclers Coalition (CRC), the Club Conservation Commendation from the Middletown Garden Club and The Rockfall Foundation’s Tom Odell Distinguished Service Award. She served as the Chairman of the CT Recyclers Coalition Government Affairs Committee from 2004-2008, and as President of that organization from 2012-2016. She currently serves on the Board of RecycleCT, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing recycling education and awareness.
The Sustainability Committee meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Old Town Hall in Haddam. The Committee was created to help improve recycling and waste management efforts throughout Haddam, Higganum and Haddam Neck. It has successfully launched a food scrap waste and used textiles collection effort in cooperation with the Town of Haddam. It also has turned its attention to improving recycling at town parks and ballfields. New committee members are always welcome.
