On Saturday, April 6, 2019, Kim Danaher received the Firefighter of the Year 2018 award for the Haddam Neck Volunteer Fire Department at the department’s annual banquet, the first female to win that award at HNVFD. Kim Danaher has been a member of the HNVFD for two years. According to Captain Danaher, Kim has her EMR license and is currently taking an EMT course as well. Kim comes from a firefighting family; 10 of the 24 active members of the department are Danahers, spanning three generations.

Kim volunteers with the East Hampton Ambulance for 30+ hours each week, and has two children, one of whom is active in the Department as well.

The firefighter of the year is chosen based on effort made through the year, according to Captain Danaher. Kim has made 67% of the calls in 2018; one of the highest percentages.
