Haddam Garden Club Presents Program on Stone Walls of New England

Submitted by Debbie Karpf

(March 16, 2024) — The Haddam Garden Club will welcome UConn Geology Professor Robert Thorson on April 10, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. for a program titled, “Stone Walls: The Binding Threads of New England’s Rural Landscape.”

The presentation is based on his 2023 extended essay for Smithsonian, “How Stone Walls Became a Signature Landform of New England.”

Professor Thorson will explain how the rough lines of stone, originally built as barriers between fields and farms, became the binding threads of its cultural fabric. He also will  discuss Haddam’s special geological setting.

This program will be presented at the Haddam Fire House, 439 Saybrook Road in Higganum. $10 Advance purchase.
