The Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacon (RRFB) at the crosswalk in front of the Senior Center is also operational, though there is still some fine-tuning to be done on volumes. This equipment is designed to enhance pedestrian conspicuity and increase driver awareness at uncontrolled, marked crosswalks.
Basically, a pedestrian pushes the button and a voice notifies the pedestrian that the yellow lights are flashing and they can begin to cross. Cars see the pedestrian in the crosswalk, and the flashing lights, and they are required by law to stop. While testing the system, about half of the cars stopped, the other half just drove right through, even while I was standing at the crosswalk. It is a new system and some drivers will take some time to get accustomed to it.
Please do not get a false sense of security. Some cars will not automatically stop. As always, pedestrians should still proceed with caution after looking both ways.
