(Oct. 22, 2021) — The Haddam Killingworth High School Girls Soccer team wrapped up their season with a couple close losses this week. On Wednesday, the team celebrated their senior day game against East Catholic. The pregame honored this year’s seniors with their families. The emcee’s (Caroline Conte & Julia Favalora-juniors) did a great job acknowledging seniors Rhianna Phipps, Hadley Commerford, Yumi Imai, Leah Sosnoski, Sierra Hajek, Sophia Torello, & Brianna Nugent. Sophomore Liana Goodison provided a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem. A moment of silence was held for Gianna Vincelett, an incoming freshman who lost her life on July 29th when she was hit by a vehicle riding her bike. She grew up with many of the younger players in the soccer program and played with many of these players during the summer league.
Tulanh Criscoulo and Hadley Commerford scored for the Cougars, but it wasn’t enough as East Catholic score one more than HK. The goalkeepers, Brianna Nugent, Rhianna Phipps, and Sophia Torello split time in goal, and also gave way to Vyvyan Laurenza who made an appearance at the end of the game. While the girls didn’t get the win, the seniors will look fondly back at the many memories they have had over their years playing at HKHS.
On Friday, Oct. 22, 2021, conference opponent Cromwell visited HK. Both teams battled for possession in first half and neither were able to capitalize on a their opportunities.
Goalkeeper Sophia Torello made some very good saves along with Cromwell’s Lily Kenney. In the second half, Cromwell’s Gabriella Voccio scored the only goal of the game. Torello was knocked out of action when she collided with a Cromwell player making her fourth save of the game. Brianna Nugent came in to make a couple saves herself. The Cougars finish the regular season 6-6-4. Currently, HK has the final spot of the upcoming Shoreline Conference Tournament but holding that spot will be determined officially after a couple opponents finish their conference play next week. The Cougars have made the state tournament in which they are excited to be in again after the state tournament was put on hold last season due to Covid.
