From the Desk of Cathy Iino, Killingworth First Selectman: December 2019

Thank you to all the people of Killingworth for their strong vote of support in November. We have a lot of work to do, and it helps that so many people got engaged in the election this year. Killingworth had the highest turnout in the state on November 5, 2019: 60 percent! The state average was 34 percent. That is something for all of us to be proud of.

The most common remark I heard from newcomers and longtime residents alike during the campaign was, “I love this town.” That was gratifying. Sometimes the speaker followed up with worry about preserving what they love, or being able to afford to stay here, or how Connecticut’s economy and governance is affecting us. These are the hard issues that will be on the front burner for the new Board of Selectmen, Board of Finance, and Planning & Zoning Commission.

On the Board of Selectmen, Eileen Blewett takes Nancy Gorski’s place for the new term. As you probably know, Eileen is also a member of the RSD17 Board of Education, and I hope that her service in those two roles will help us work even more closely with the school district than in the past. I want to say what a pleasure it has been serving with Nancy for the last two years. I know she will remain engaged in public service.

I look forward to working with all committee members new and old and to hearing everyone’s concerns and ideas in the months ahead. Starting in January, I plan to write a mid-monthly column for Haddam-Killingworth News, and I welcome questions about any topics or concerns.

May your holidays be full of peace and good will.

Cathy Iino
