(June 15, 2020) — Four new “Little Free Libraries” have been installed and are now available for use throughout the Town of Haddam. One is in Higganum Center at the Village Market (Ming’s), one on Rt. 81 at the Dairy Barn, one in Tylerville in front of River Valley Provisions & Tony’s and one at the firehouse in Haddam Neck. Brainerd Memorial Library will be monitoring & maintaining these units. Look for announcements posted on the sides.
A Little Free Library is a free book-sharing box where anyone may take a book or leave a book. They function on the honor system. You do not need to share a book in order to take one. If you take a book or two from a little library, try to bring some to share to that same library, or another in your area, when you can.
The Higganum Vision Group (HVG), founded in 2009, and now disbanded, initiated the construction & installation of the 4 Little Libraries as its final project. These Little Libraries supplement the Little Library the Girl Scouts set up in front of AJ’s & Jack’s.
The four Little Libraries sponsored by HVG were designed and built by Gerry Matthews and were completed with the generosity of Shagbark Lumber & Farm Supply in East Haddam.
There is no defined design for a Little Free Library although Gerry’s design is unique. Below the standard box that will hold adult books is an area specifically for children. The size accommodates the larger, thin volumes of kid’s books and side doors are designed for little hand access without standing in the front. Solar lighting is installed to help viewing in the dark.
Editor’s Note: There is also a Little Free Library on Haddam Ridge. See this story for more information on that one.
