According to Connecticut State Police, at 3:50 p.m. on Friday, March 11, 2022, John Kowal, age 19, of Higganum, was driving a 2014 Corvette, traveling southbound on Route 154, south of Landing Road, and lost control of the vehicle, spun out, and collided with a tree along the east shoulder of the roadway. Kowal was transported by ambulance to Hartford Hospital.
Connecticut State Police and Haddam Volunteer Fire Company responded to the scene, and Saybrook Road was closed for hours to investigate the accident.
A second occupant of the vehicle, Steven Zichichi, age 18, of Killingworth, “succumbed to his injuries that he sustained in the collision, and was pronounced deceased on scene,” according to the police report.
Both teens were 2021 graduates of Haddam Killingworth High School. A GoFundMe to support the family of Steven Zichichi has been set up.
The accident is under investigation. The CSP ask that any witnesses to the collision are asked to contact TFC Swokla at Troop F at 860-399-2100.
