Enjoy Labor Day Weekend at the 112th Haddam Neck Fair

Submitted by Jackie MacKnight, Haddam Neck Fair Association

(August 26, 2024) — As summer winds down, the historic Haddam Neck Fair is set to return for its 112th year, promising a weekend packed with fun, tradition, and new surprises for the whole family. From Friday, August 30, 2024 through Monday, September 2, 2024, the fairgrounds will come alive with music, competitions, exhibits and the welcoming spirit that has made this one of Connecticut’s most cherished agricultural fairs.

A Tradition of Community and Agriculture

The Haddam Neck Fair has long been a celebration of the region’s agricultural roots, offering a platform for local farmers, artisans and community members to share their skills and produce. This year’s fair continues this proud tradition with a wide variety of exhibits and competitions, from flower arranging to baking, photography, and crafts. Whether you’re showcasing your talents or simply enjoying the creativity on display, there’s something here for everyone.

New Highlights for 2024

While the fair remains steeped in tradition, it also embraces new activities to keep things fresh and exciting. One of the standout additions this year is the Kids Power Wheels Derby, sponsored by Timber Works Tree Service, scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the small ring.

Children ages 3 to 10 are invited to bring their electric ride-in Power Wheels vehicles and compete in a fun-filled race that’s sure to delight both participants and spectators alike.

Another significant change for 2024 is the adjustment to the Truck Pull schedule. To better accommodate participants and audiences, the popular Street Stock Truck Pull has been moved from its usual Friday night slot to Sunday. This change allows for a double session, with the first round starting at Noon and the second at 6:00 p.m., giving everyone more time to enjoy the event without the rush.

Kevin Burnham, president of the Board of Directors for the fair, emphasized the reason behind this change: “Many popular events were scheduled for Friday night, including the street stock pulls and the Hartford rock band Max Creek. Since the fair starts at 3:00 p.m. on opening day, there was a short window for multiple well-attended events. Planners decided to move the street stock truck pulls to Sunday, which allowed for a double session.”

And don’t worry about heading home early—Monday is Labor Day, so you can stay and enjoy the pulls without cutting your evening short!

Entertainment for All Ages

As always, the Haddam Neck Fair offers a wide range of entertainment options. This year’s musical lineup includes performances from local favorites like Downtown 6, The Seven Wonders (a Fleetwood Mac tribute band), Rock Landing, and the legendary Max Creek. Families will also enjoy the lively antics of Pete and Chris’s Pirate and Bubble Show, as well as Judi Jones’s Dancing with Hoops.

For those looking to test their mettle, the Fair hosts a variety of contests throughout the weekend. Classic events like the three-legged race, egg toss, and pie-eating contest are always a hit, while adults can take part in the ever-popular Redneck Strongman Contest and women’s skillet throwing.

A Day at the Fair

The fair officially kicks off on Friday at 3:00 p.m., with an opening ceremony featuring members of the Connecticut Army National Guard at 6:00 p.m. Gates will open at 7:30 a.m. on the following three days, giving early birds plenty of time to explore the exhibits, creative vendors, enjoy a hearty breakfast, or take in the sights and sounds of the fairgrounds.

One event not to miss is the 5K Road Race on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. The race winds through scenic country roads, offering both participants and spectators beautiful views of the Haddam Neck countryside.
