sings in Connecticut NATS competition

WILLIMANTIC, CT (04/01/2021)– Seven students from the Music Program at Eastern Connecticut State University recently competed in the Connecticut chapter competition of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS).

Among the students was freshman Grace Michalowski of Haddam Neck, who majors in Music. Michalowski sings soprano and performed the songs “She Used to Be Mine” (from Waitress); “Cock-Eyed Optimist” (from South Pacific) by Richard Rodgers; and “Summer in Ohio” (from The Last Five Years) by Jason Robert Brown.

Founded in 1944, NATS is the largest association of teachers of singing in the world. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the competition was carried out virtually with performers sending in prerecorded videos. The judges panel was composed of voice professionals from across the state, including representatives from universities and private studios.

Eastern’s Music program provides a supportive environment, individualized mentoring and outstanding facilities where aspiring performers, composers and scholars can develop their talents. Coursework provides theoretical and experiential opportunities that emphasize the history, theory, performance and criticism of music and musicians from Western and non-Western traditions.
