Small Shop ~ Big Heart
At the heart of Higganum are our small shops, run by dedicated owners who put their heart and soul into their businesses. This couldn’t be truer than Bernadette Markey, owner of Brewed Awakening!
On October 5, 2011, Bernadette took over the little coffee, breakfast & lunch café in downtown Higganum, at 19 Killingworth Rd, and put her signature touch on this inviting shop. She knew long ago that she wanted to own her own business and be her own boss, so when this opportunity arose, she jumped on it!
Although Bernadette is self-taught when it comes to navigating the kitchen, she has such fond memories of cooking with her mom when she was a child. Some of her most sought-after eats include her breakfast sandwiches served on fresh baked goods that she brings in from local bakeries. Don’t forget her daily lunch specials posted on the sandwich board sign out front for a quick on the go lunch! Even for this vegan foodie, she has fresh pressed veggie & fruit-based juices made daily in her shop!
Being so conveniently located she get’s many customers who pop in on their way to work, or during their lunch break, but she also has her loyal followers, she affectionately calls “The Retired 7:00AM Crew” who gather just outside her shop and enjoy some lively conversation while having their breakfast.
Although Brewed Awakening is open Monday through Saturday, 5:30-2:00, she is often there at 5:00AM for those early risers needing a cup of coffee on the run! Behind the scenes, Bernadette spends her time sourcing, shopping and prepping many of the ingredients for her well loved café. Let’s all wish Bernadette a big congrats for her ten years of dedicated service and another successful decade to come!
