ARTFARM Presents “The One Who” in East Haddam

Submitted by Marcella Trowbridge

(July 13, 2024) — The Middletown-based theater company ARTFARM will premiere a new work on July 27, 2024 at The Sanctuary at Shepardfields in East Haddam.

“The One Who” is an outdoor, site-specific immersive performance by artists exploring their relationship to Nature, Each Other and the World and is inspired by the spirit of the Buddhist Goddess of Compassion Kuan Yin: “The one who hears the suffering of the world, and is called to compassionate action.”

“The One Who” will be performed at The Sanctuary at 59 Bogel Road in East Haddam on Saturday, July 27, 2024 (rain date July 28, 2024). Performances will be at 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., followed by a Jazz Concert by The Grays at 6:30 p.m.

Audiences will be guided throughout the Sanctuary and discover artists responding to and reflecting on connection to self, to the land, water, flora, fauna- and to one another. Part ritual, part performance, part a sacred walk on the grounds.

ARTFARM Artistic Director, and “The One Who” director,  Marcella Trowbridge, says “I have found a deepening connection with the land and the stewards of the land at The Sanctuary. I have offered workshops at The Sanctuary before, but this new deepening of performance inspired by the land itself- and by Kuan Yin- as it encourages us to touch our grief, our joy and our potential for increased consciousness and liberation- feels like a perfect next stage in this blossoming relationship. Our world is in a state of collective trauma and we could all use support holding this suffering while rediscovering our potential for joy, connection, beauty and mercy. I believe in the powers of performance and the natural world as conduits of healing and transformation.”

Each performance is limited to 40 participants, so it is necessary that audience members purchase their tickets in advance to reserve a place. It is unlikely that there will be any tickets available at the event (if there are, they will be $30 per person. Tickets purchased in advance are $25).

Important Note: The One Who requires audience members to walk on uneven ground, sit on the ground, and stand. This may be difficult for people with ambulatory challenges. If you have questions, contact info@art-farm.org.

“The One Who” is made possible thanks to grant funding from the Connecticut Office of the Arts (which receives funding from the National Endowment for the Arts), the Middletown Commission on the Arts, Sunnyside Trust, and the Rockfall Foundation, as well as individual donations by people supporting ARTFARM’s mission of cultivating high quality theater with a commitment to simple living, environmental sustainability and social justice.
