(July 15, 2023) — University of Vermont President Suresh Garimella conferred degrees on an estimated 3,383 graduates at the UVM’s 222nd Commencement ceremony in Burlington this past May. Speaking on the spirit of excellence, the Honorable Sethuraman Panchanathan, director of the U.S. National Science Foundation, delivered the keynote address.

Among the graduates were the following students from our area:

Ian McHugh of Killingworth graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience.

Zachary Marciniec of Haddam graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Forestry.

Shania Krause of Higganum graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Genetics and Psychological Science.

Sadie Strom of Higganum graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics.

In addressing the Class of 2023, Garimella invoked the words of writer Vladamir Nabokov to encourage graduates forward: “The pages are still blank, but there is a miraculous feeling of the words being there, written in invisible ink and clamoring to become visible,” he said. “Go forth and write your next chapter in bold strokes. Go dauntlessly wherever your stories take you.”
