Killingworth Evergreen Garden Club Delivers Spring

Submitted by Kathleen Amoia

(March 17, 2026) — In the middle of a cold and windy March, Killingworth’s Evergreen Garden Club delivered colorful and beautifully arranged bouquets to several shut-ins and elderly seniors living alone. The flowers were a welcome surprise to recipients and a happy act of volunteerism for Club members, who consider it a more creative activity than weeding and raking at the Traffic Circle or at Town Hall.

This is the second year the Evergreen Garden Club organized the activity. It begins with collecting donated vases, securing the Killingworth Library meeting room for the assembling of bouquets, and the purchasing of flowers with funds from the Club’s treasury. Members gather round a table full of flowers and empty vases to do their thing. A winning arrangement is on display at the library as a thank you for the judging by Library Director Ben Sodergren and Assistant Director Tammy Eustis. This year’s winner for the most artistic arrangement was Sue Brown.

The project is called Welcome Spring, and recipients’ names are suggested by our town Municipal Agent and the churches that serve our senior community. For a few hours, Spring is spread all over the Library’s meeting room table. Before long, a variety of cheerful arrangements are packed into cars for same-day delivery. It is an event that puts smiles on the faces of all involved and a reminder that even the worst of winters will end in a glorious spring, the season in which “the earth laughs in flowers.” (Ralph Waldo Emerson)

For those interested, the Evergreen Garden Club welcomes new members. They meet at the Killingworth Library on the second Tuesday of the month, and guests can drop in for more information. The club has a Facebook Page, and the co-chairs, Sue Adinolfo and Denise Slater, can be contacted at their websites: Susan.adinolfo@comcast.net or  DeniseSlater67@gmail.com.

And to you, Spring, we welcome your colors, your flowers, the warmth of your sun.
