Swing Bridge Construction Update: Week of January 26, 2025

Submitted by Sara Mendillo

(January 26, 2025) — The Connecticut Department of Transportation advises the following construction activity will take place at the Haddam/East Haddam Swing Bridge (Route 82) during the upcoming week of January 26, 2025:

Overnight Bridge Closures

The contractor has scheduled overnight bridge closures this week as follows:

  • Monday night (1/27/25) into Tuesday morning (1/28/25) – 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
  • Tuesday night (1/28/25) into Wednesday morning (1/29/25) – 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances could impact these scheduled closures. Any changes will be communicated.

Lane Closures

  • Single lane closures on Route 82 may occur Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. within the project limits. Traffic flaggers will coordinate the alternating traffic sequence.
  • Both lanes will be reopened and operational during peak traffic hours.

Marine Advisory

Boaters are advised that the bridge is not currently being opened for tall recreational vessels. Openings will resume on February 15, 2025.

Mariners are advised that the contractor’s suspended scaffold has been removed from spans 3 and 4. The contractor still has scaffolding hung in span 2.

The tide clearance board is recommended as the best reference for gauging clearance at time of passage. The board is located on the bulkhead at Goodspeed, and has been set to indicate the vertical clearance to the contractor’s suspended scaffold.

The bridge operator can be reached at 860-218-4973. Please be advised that this phone number is designated for marine use only.
