Tylerville Roundabouts Project: Two-Week Lookahead August 6, 2024

Submitted by Sara Mendillo

(August 6, 2024) — The Connecticut Department of Transportation has provided a two-week lookahead for the Roundabouts project in the Tylerville section of Haddam:

Northern Roundabout
Drainage will continue to be installed from the Tylerville garage, moving toward the Northern Roundabout. This work will be completed during overnight hours.  Drivers should anticipate alternating one-way traffic along Route 154 for this work. However, much of the work is in the shoulder and the contractor has indicated that they may be able to maintain two lanes of traffic.  There is one major road crossing and catch basin in front of the Tylerville garage that will cause the most interference for traffic.

Southern Roundabout
The Southern Roundabout will continue to be very active.  Most of the work here will still occur off the roadway behind the barrier and pertain to the bridge construction.  The current orientation continues as the staging for the foreseeable future.  The biggest construction-related traffic impacts will be as follows:

  1. Truck traffic entering and exiting the site.
    • First side of the bridge footings are being poured this week so anticipate concrete truck traffic in/out of the site, but very minimal traffic interruption.
    • The contractor plans to start granite curbing installations along the Southern Roundabout approaches. Drivers should anticipate shoulder interruptions and occasional equipment crossings on Routes 82 and 154 during the day.
    • Material/Equipment Deliveries.
    • The contractor plans to start building up the sidewalks/approaches to the Southern Roundabout. The majority of this work should be off the road or in the shoulder.
  2. Night Work is expected at the Southern Roundabout in order to continue water main installation. This work will impact traffic, and it is likely to result in alternating one-way traffic on Route 154. The contractor needs to install new Ductile Iron Pipe for the town’s water main. According to the most recently submitted two-week lookahead, this work is expected for both weeks.

Note: The contractor is not allowed to impact traffic within the following time frames (within shifting stages):

Monday through Friday: 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday: 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

All traffic patterns and/or project work are subject to change as necessary.  Construction of this nature requires flexibility as it requires both the coordination of many sub-contractors, and sequenced work.
