Build a Cardboard Kingdom – Tuesday, February 3, 2026 4:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Come and help us build a cardboard castle, or whatever else you can imagine! Our Makedo construction kits are full of kid-friendly tools to cut, fold and attach cardboard boxes, so all you need to bring is your creativity. Kids are invited to drop in anytime between 4:00 and 6:30. Feel free to bring large boxes if you have them, but there’s no obligation to supply your own cardboard; we have a healthy supply of appliance boxes on hand. No registration necessary.
Create a Vision Board – Wednesday, February 4, 2026 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. We’re a little over a month into the new year. Have you given any thought to your dreams and goals? Join us for a relaxing evening of thoughtfulness and collage, as we create Vision Boards, a map of your plans for 2026. All supplies will be provided – just bring your ideas! Suitable for teens through seniors. Space is limited, so please register in advance.
Tweens Writing – Friday, February 6, 2026 3:30 p.m.-4:45 p.m. Here’s a chance for tweens (ages 9-12) to write and share their stories with their peers! We will explore different writing genres, including fantasy, family stories, essays, poetry, and research. Note: this group is based on a workshop model. A writing prompt is shared at each meet-up. The prompt is then developed into something to share at the next meeting. If you are new to the group or miss a meeting, please call the library at 860-663-2000 and arrange to pick up the prompt. Please register in advance to reserve your spot.
Take Your Child to the Library Day – Saturday, February 7, 2026 9:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Families are invited to celebrate this national event with a visit to the library!
9:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.: participate in a Bunny Scavenger Hunt – find the hidden bunnies in the library and win a prize! No registration is required to enjoy the Scavenger Hunt.
10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.: Mrs. Fig will read “Snow,” by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace and “Bunny Slopes,” by Claudia Rueda. Then, create your own cut-paper bunny puppet. Registration is required for the story time and craft. Space and supplies are limited, so please reserve your spot! Also enjoy our book collections, magazines, puzzles, games, toys, and all the library has to offer.
Valentine Bouquets for Teens and Adults with Special Needs – Saturday, February 7, 2026 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Teens and adults with special needs are invited to attend this creative seasonal event! We will make Valentine’s Day bouquets, for ourselves or someone in our lives. This program is free, and all supplies will be provided. For ages 16-99. Killingworth Library is wheelchair accessible, but you must have your own transportation. Bring along a friend, parent, or support staff to join the fun! Make a Heart-Felt Gift with Mrs. Fig – Tuesday, February 10, 2026 3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. Elementary-age students are invited to join us, as we create a special Valentine’s Day craft for a loved one! Materials will be provided. Space and supplies are limited, so please register in advance.
Pajama Storytime – Tuesday, February 10, 2026 6:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Come dressed in your PJs and bring your favorite stuffed animal and blanket. Mrs. Fig will share stories from our favorite authors. This month, she’s reading Jan Brett. Readers will be engaged with sound effects, movements, and puppets. Family members of all ages are welcome! Please register in advance, so we know how many friends to expect.
Live Theater: The Day the Crayons Quit – Wednesday, February 11, 2026 10:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m. The Grove School Children’s Theater Troupe returns for their adaptation of The Day the Crayons Quit (based on the book by Drew Daywalt). Join us in the Children’s Room for another amazing performance, where these actors promote their love of storytelling! Perfect fun for all family members. Connecticut and the Road to Victory at Yorktown – Wednesday, February 11, 2026 3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. In the fall of 1781, after six years of conflict, the Siege of Yorktown marked the last major engagement of the Revolutionary War. What role did Connecticut have to play in this military victory hundreds of miles from our borders, and what did it mean for our budding nation? This program will include a talk and a slide show, and will be presented by Killingworth resident Kelvin Cole. Please register online to save your seat.
Drive-In Movie Night – Thursday, February 12, 2026 6:00 p.m.-6:45 p.m. Decorate a cardboard box with paper plate wheels and some fancy designs, then bring your “car” to the children’s room for a “drive-in” movie! Sit in your car, enjoy a bag of Smartfood popcorn, and enjoy a storybook film. Please contact the library or visit the Calendar on our website for this month’s title, and please register to reserve your “parking space” (floor seating is available, too).
Writers Writing – Fridays, February 13, 2026 and February 27, 2026 1:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m. This is an ongoing program for adults that explores different genres of writing. The group meets twice a month to share writing assignments in creating memoir, a personal essay or story, poetry, and tales for children. Note: sharing is not required! Shyness and uncertainty are always welcome. This is a popular program, so please register in advance, even if you have attended before.
YouthAstroNet – Saturdays, starting February 14, 2026 9:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m. The Youth Astronomy Network is a community of youth, educators, and scientists, which provides youth with unique access to the resources of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. During the YouthAstroNet program, participants will use the Internet to control real robotic telescopes, and learn to process their images with professional software! Throughout the program they’ll have the opportunity to do hands-on activities to investigate their own questions about space, as well as the technologies that operate the telescopes. They will even have opportunities to speak directly with scientist mentors from the Center for Astrophysics. At the end of the program, each student will get a chance to focus on an area of interest and design a capstone project to present their work. This is a seven-week program run by Killingworth Library staff in partnership with the YouthAstroNet team. The program will conclude on March 28, 2026 with a public presentation of participants’ capstone projects. Each session will build on the last, so please sign up only if you plan to be able to complete the entire program. YouthAstroNet is for students in Grades 4 – 8. Registration for this program is required; please email Ben at bsodergren@killingworthlibrary.org to sign up and for further information. This program is part of a science education study by Smithsonian and Harvard, and parents/legal guardians will need to return a consent/opt-out form to the library prior to participation.
Bird Valentines – Saturday, February 14, 2026 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. February is National Bird Feeding Month! Come make a sunflower butter-pine cone Valentine for the birds at the library (or to take home, as you wish). If you would also like to make a paper Valentine for another loved one, supplies for Victorian bird-themed cards will be available. This activity is suitable for children through age 8 and their family members. Space and supplies are limited, so please register in advance.
Math Mania – Tuesday, February 17, 2026 4:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. There are so many fun games you can play while reinforcing your math skills at the same time. Join Mrs. Fig and other math mania enthusiasts, as this month we enjoy an Abe Lincoln measurement activity and money game! Suitable for elementary-age children. LEGO STEM Club – Tuesday, February 17, 2026 5:45 p.m.-6:45 p.m. Future engineers! Learn to use the STEM steps to success as you solve the problem, plan and create a design, and test your project! This session’s project is: Logo shadows! Suitable for elementary grades 1 through 4. Space and supplies are limited, so please register in advance.
Chinese New Year – Thursday, February 19, 2026 6:00 p.m.-6:45 p.m. Come and learn about the Chinese New Year and hear a story with Mrs. Fig! It’s the Year of the Horse, and you’ll get to design your own horse decoration to take home. Then we’ll make some joyous noise to guarantee a happy and lucky New Year. Polar Bears and How They Live in the Arctic – Saturday, February 21, 2026 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Do you love polar bears? Come learn more about them, with Bauer Park’s environmental educator, Julie Ainsworth! One child volunteer will get to dress as a polar bear, and we’ll all learn about the body parts that keep the bears warm, help them find food, and allow them to travel in the Arctic. Then visit learning stations featuring activities about polar bears and their adaptations. Also make a polar bear puppet! Suitable for ages 5 and older. Punk Taco Adventures: Interactive Author Talk – Saturday, February 21, 2026 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Adam Wallenta is an award-winning, graphic novel author and illustrator. He will introduce his new graphic novel, Punk Taco Adventures Volume 1, that he created with his son, and read a selection from it. They will discuss their journey and process and demonstrate how everyone can use the sequential art medium to express themselves and tell their own stories, no matter how young or old you are. Follow along with Adam as he creates a brand new character with your help and teaches you how to tell a story with pictures! Suitable for elementary ages and family members. Adam’s new book is available to preorder from Papercutz.com now and Adam and Makana will be on hand to sign copies of the book at no cost. American Girl Doll Club – Tuesday, February 24, 2026 6:00 p.m.-6:45 p.m. Join us with your favorite doll (it doesn’t have to be an American Girl doll) and make new friends! Enjoy a short story or discussion, activities, and a craft. For this session, we’re learning about Ivy Ling! Suitable for elementary grades 1 through 4. Space is limited, so please register in advance.
