As Board of Finance candidates in the upcoming election, we see a great opportunity for Haddam to strengthen its financial position through thoughtful growth and smart planning. The primary role of the Board of Finance is to evaluate and approve yearly budgets and the town’s mill rate, as well as plan for future expenditures. Additionally, we believe it’s important to begin public discussion about how to ensure the long term financial stability of the town in a changing economic landscape.

Currently, Haddam faces challenges in generating revenues: on a per-person basis, we generate fewer dollars per mill rate compared to almost all neighboring towns, and we are in the bottom third across all of Connecticut. Put simply, Haddam taxpayers have mill rates similar to or greater than other communities while receiving fewer services, less infrastructure maintenance and reduced investment in our future. The reasons vary. For example, Chester has improved its bottom line through commercial development, while East Haddam benefits from high residential property values.

The challenges Haddam faces aren’t set in stone. We can develop innovative strategies to improve our tax base. Our town can strengthen its financial foundation through strategic economic development that attracts and supports businesses while preserving our character. We can encourage light commercial activity, broadening our tax base without creating sprawl that would compromise Haddam’s appeal.

Success requires creative thinking about diversifying revenue sources to support our town while minimizing the burden on residents. This approach will ensure Haddam maintains sound financial footing not just now, but well into the future.

Sincerely,
Ryan Thompson, Collin Raymond and Bill Thompson
