Letter to the Editor (D’Angelo): In Support of the RSD 17 Budget

As a Selectman in Killingworth and a former twelve-year member of the Region 17 Board of Education, I’ve seen firsthand how seriously the BOE takes its responsibility to deliver a budget that is both educationally sound and fiscally responsible. The current proposal reflects months of thoughtful review, multiple rounds of reductions, and a commitment to meeting the needs of students, families, and taxpayers.

One position under scrutiny is the Assistant Superintendent. This role is not excess bureaucracy—it is essential to the district’s operations and plays a vital role in both operations and instructional quality. This leader oversees Human Resources for more than 350 staff—managing certification, evaluations, onboarding, benefits, and legal compliance. The role also advances instructional initiatives and streamlines internal systems, allowing educators to focus on students. Eliminating the position would undermine efficiency, staffing and stability without meaningful savings.

More broadly, supporting our schools is an investment in the health of our entire community. Quality schools attract families, sustain property values, and reflect our shared priorities. When we fund public education responsibly, we’re not just supporting students—we’re protecting the strength and future of Killingworth and Haddam alike.

This is a thoughtful, balanced budget that reflects both need and discipline. I urge voters to support it on July 8.

Joel D’Angelo, Selectman, Town of Killingworth
