The Search is Over for Killingworth’s Top Dog of 2024!

Submitted by Dawn Mooney, Killingworth Town Clerk

(August 2, 2024) — Killingworth’s Top Dog has been found! Meet Charlie, an adorable, three-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who spreads love and happiness with every step he takes (photo below).

Amazingly, Charlie wasn’t hiding at all; he has actually been living in Sun Beechwood Community since 2022!  Charlie was “rescued” from a pet store as a tiny puppy and has lived a wonderful life ever since.  Always smiling, Charlie loves his front porch, his stuffed Dora and clownfish toys, and his favorite blueberry treats.

But most of all he loves his neighborhood and his best friends, Ella the Cavapoo and Dexter the Shih Tzu mix. Charlie keeps a watchful eye on his community as well, recently alerting his owners to a gentleman who had collapsed and required medical assistance while walking in the roadway.  And Charlie is every parent’s dream child, when at 5:00 p.m. every day he reminds his owners to brush his teeth!!  Really Charlie, you truly are a Top Dog!

Killingworth’s #2 Top Dog, Fred (photo above), is just the sweetest bulldog mix imaginable.  Fred reluctantly came into Town Hall to claim his prize accompanied by his mom and his emotional support dog Sprout. While Sprout snacked on treats and greeted everyone in the building, Fred shyly sat behind his mom and gently trembled. His life had a rough start when, at seven months old, Fred and his littermates (then named “Brad” and “Chad”) were already traumatized and in a rescue.

Luckily Fred’s family, including Sprout, fell in love with him and the rest is history.  Fred loves all other pups, playing outdoors, ice cream and car R-I-D-E-S, just don’t say the word if you don’t mean it!  This well-trained pup ends every day in bed, under the covers and with his head on a pillow, exactly as he should.

Rounding out our top three is Kiera (photo above), a friendly Lab with a shiny black coat and a loving personality.  Kiera was rescued by her owners at eighteen months old from a breeder who used her to make money.  But her “working days” are long gone!

Kiera now spends her time at home greeting the mailman every day and gardening, or rather stealing cucumbers and green beans from the garden.  While she was in Town Hall collecting her prize, Kiera even went out of her way to welcome and befriend Town Hall’s own mail carrier.  She loves belly rubs, playing fetch, and traveling the U.S. and Canada in her family’s camper, stopping at tag sales along the way.  But please don’t worry – Kiera always returns home to Killingworth!
