Funny Money in Haddam

By Edward Munster

(July 11, 2024) — Fake currency does not come with warning labels, as in the photo below.

The fake $50 bill shown above was recently passed at a local business in Haddam.  When the store made its nightly deposit the bank quickly identified the bill as bogus.

The bank has told this reporter that one thing that is different about the fake bill is that it feels smoother than real currency.  The fake denominations that are usually seen are $20, $50 and $100.

When a person tries to deposit a bogus bill the bank will confiscate the bill and is required to notify the FBI.  Unfortunately, the person, in this case, a store owner has no recourse and takes the loss just as if someone had stolen from him.

The state police at Troop F were not yet aware of this particular incident and were not aware of any other recent such activity.   The store owner wanted to alert other business owners and town residents to be on the lookout for fake bills.
