Governor Lamont Issues Extreme Heat Advisory

Submitted by State Sen. Norm Needleman

(July 8, 2024) — Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont has issued the second extreme heat advisory for the state this summer. It will remain in effect until 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, as forecasts call for temperatures of up to 97 degrees, temperatures hot enough to cause illness and impact health.

High humidity in conjunction with the heat is expected to make things worse, with possible “feels like” temperatures higher than 100 degrees in some areas. With the hot weather protocol in place, anyone in danger of heat or humidity-related issues, especially those with underlying conditions, can call 211 or visit 211.org to find information about cooling centers. (In Haddam, both the Senior Center and Brainerd Memorial Library have been used as cooling centers in the past. Contact them for information on extended hours).

Be sure to drink plenty of fluids, utilize air conditioning whenever possible, avoid sun, and keep an eye on your relatives and neighbors who may need help. Be especially careful around hot cars – don’t leave animals in them at any cost – drink plenty before you’re thirsty, and wear lightweight and light-colored clothing.
