Growing Groceries Series (through May 23, 2024)
Learn how to start a vegetable garden or hone your gardening skills with free classes presented by University of Connecticut Master Gardeners. Free plant seeds will also be available, thanks to our program supporters. You may attend any or all of the programs:
February 29, 2024 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. – Beginning Your Veggie Garden (beginners)
March 28, 2024 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. – Growing Solanaceous Veggies (mainly tomatoes, peppers and eggplants, beginners to advanced)
April 25, 2024 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. – Growing Cucurbits (mainly squash and cucumbers), Beans and Corn (beginners to advanced)
May 23, 2024 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. – Seed Saving (plants to target and proper seed collection and storage, advanced)

Create Total Solar Eclipse Art
Drop-in activity, March 18, 2024 to March 30, 2024. Have you heard about the total solar eclipse, happening on April 8, 2024? Connecticut will see 90% totality! The library will get you in the mood – and ready to view – with our Solar Eclipse Art station. Create a cool solar corona drawing, then show it off at the circulation desk to receive a free pair of eclipse viewing glasses. The glasses were provided to Killingworth (and to many other public libraries) through the support of the STAR Net Space Science Institute and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Available while supplies last.
Polar Bears and How They Live
Saturday, March 2, 2024, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Do you love polar bears? Come learn more about them with Julie Ainsworth, an environmental educator at Bauer Park. One child volunteer will get dressed up as a polar bear, and we’ll learn the adaptations that help polar bears keep warm, find food, and travel in the Arctic. Then, enjoy four hands-on stations featuring activities about polar bear life. Finally, we’ll create polar bear puppets for you to take home and enjoy. Suitable for children ages 5+. Please register in advance.
Oppenheimer: the Connecticut Connections
Wednesday, March 6, 2024 7:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. The life of J. Robert Oppenheimer has received a lot of attention this year with the release of the Academy Award-nominated film, “Oppenheimer.” Though most famous for his time at Los Alamos, the physicist and his fateful work had many connections to the state of Connecticut. Whether or not you’ve seen the movie, join Phil Devlin to learn about the role that our state played in Oppenheimer’s story, and in the development of the atomic bomb.
