Submitted by Haddam Land Trust

(January 13, 2024) — Join us on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at 6:00 pm, at the Firehouse #1 in Higganum for the Haddam Land Trust Annual Meeting. The Business Meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. with pizza and snacks at 6:45 p.m. For more information, visit hltrust.org.

At 7:00 p.m. we will host a program on Reducing Light Pollution, presented by Leo Smith, Connecticut Chapter Chair of Dark Sky International. The program is free and open to the public.

Light Pollution is a known problem now receiving significant attention globally due to its alarming rate of harm to all living species – including humans. Light pollution is hazardous and needs to be monitored and controlled effectively.
One good aspect regarding light pollution: it can be reversed, unlike many other forms of pollution, if we each contribute toward minimizing it. Being aware of the light pollution problem is an important first step. Awareness alone, though, is not enough. Instead, there is a need to take action to reduce light pollution.
At a time of climate change, when energy conservation has become critical, attention is needed on how we use lighting. Where we light, How much we light and When we light are all important. With the advent of LEDs, the color temperature of light also becomes an important factor in controlling light pollution.
