18 HKMS Students Participated in 2020 National History Day

Submitted by Dolores Bates, Principal, HKMS.

Haddam-Killingworth Middle School had 18 students participate in the regional competition for National History Day on Saturday, March 7, 2020. National History Day engages students and teachers in historical research and skills development. Every year National History Day® frames students’ research within a historical theme. The theme is chosen for the broad application to world, national, or state history and its relevance to ancient history or to the more recent past.

The 2019-2020 theme is Breaking Barriers in History. Students are able to present their research as a written paper, exhibit, website, documentary or performance and are interviewed at the competition by three judges about their research process. The top 3 finishers in each category advance to the state-level competition for a chance to go to the national competition.

The following HKMS students will be heading to the state-level competition in April:

  • Ava Harriman and Liza Murphy earned 3rd place for their exhibit on Stem Cell Research;
  • Jameson Sheehan earned 2nd place for his paper on the Fall of the Soviet Union;
  • David Sargent earned 2nd place for his documentary on the history of music;
  • Juliana Girgenti and Julia Mitchell earned 2nd place for their website on Chernobyl;
  • Morgan Cook took 1st place for her website on Clara Barton.

The students are pictured here with their teacher, Kate O’Mara.
