Swing Bridge Update: Week of September 1, 2024

Submitted by Sara Mendillo

(September 1, 2024) — The Connecticut Department of Transportation advises the following construction activities at the Haddam/East Haddam Swing Bridge (Route 82) for the week of September 1, 2024:

Overnight Bridge Closures

There are no overnight bridge closures schedule between September 1, 2024 and September 7, 2024. The next overnight bridge closures will occur on Monday, September 9, 2024, and Tuesday, September 10, 2024 from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. each night.

Any changes to this schedule will be communicated in a timely manner.

Lane Closures

  • Single lane closures on Route 82 will occur Wednesday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. within the project limits. Traffic flaggers will coordinate the alternating traffic sequence.
  • Both lanes will be reopened and operational during peak traffic hours.

Swing Span Testing

  • The contractor may occasionally perform a test opening of the new mechanicals of the swing span throughout the week. The contractor will work to limit traffic backups, but delays should be anticipated if a test occurs.

Marine Advisory

NOTE:  Beginning Sunday, September 1, 2024, the Swing Bridge will open for recreational vessels on the hour only, between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. daily.

On days when wind gusts are 25 mph or higher, swing span openings will be cancelled. Mariners intending to pass through the bridge are encouraged to monitor the wind forecast on their navigation day and call the bridge operator.

Mariners are advised that the contractor’s suspended scaffold, previously removed to provide additional clearance for vessels, is scheduled to be reinstalled this week.

The tide clearance board is recommended as the best reference for gauging clearance at time of passage. The board is located on the bulkhead at Goodspeed, and has been set to reflect the vertical clearance to the contractor’s suspended scaffold.

The bridge operator can be reached at 860-218-4973.
