Submitted by Sara Mendillo, Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce

(October 28, 2024) — The Connecticut Department of Transportation advises the following construction activities at the Haddam/East Haddam Swing Bridge (Route 82)  for the upcoming week of October 28, 2024:

Overnight Bridge Closures

  • The contractor will be performing overnight bridge closures this week as follows:
  • Monday night (10/28/24) into Tuesday morning (10/29/24) – 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
  • Tuesday night (10/29/24) into Wednesday morning (10/30/24) – 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Any changes to this schedule will be communicated in a timely manner.

Lane Closures

  • Single lane closures on Route 82 will occur Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. within the project limits. Traffic flaggers will coordinate the alternating traffic sequence.
  • Both lanes will be reopened and operational during peak traffic hours.

Marine Advisory

PLEASE NOTE: Boaters are advised that the current bridge opening schedule for tall recreational vessels (6:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. daily, on the hour only) will conclude on October 31, 2024.

Beginning November 1, 2024, bridge openings will occur daily at 10:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

The bridge will no longer open for tall recreational vessels starting on December 1, 2024. Openings will resume on February 15, 2025.

Please note that on days when wind gusts are 25 mph or higher, swing span openings will be cancelled. Mariners intending to pass through the bridge are encouraged to monitor the wind forecast on their navigation day and call the bridge operator.

Mariners are advised that the contractor’s suspended scaffold, previously removed to provide additional clearance for vessels, has been reinstalled.

The tide clearance board is recommended as the best reference for gauging clearance at time of passage. The board is located on the bulkhead at Goodspeed, and has been set to indicate the vertical clearance to the contractor’s suspended scaffold.

The bridge operator can be reached at 860-218-4973. Please be advised that this phone number is designated for marine use only.
