This presentation focuses on the story of the ship itself as well as the passengers on it, with interesting stories, especially those with Connecticut connections: the very sad story of James Kelly, the character assassination of William T. Sloper of New Britain, the moving and tragic story of Jane Carr of Windsor Locks and others. Space is limited, so please register in advance.

Introduction to Daughters of the American Revolution
Wednesday, June 21, 2023 6:30 p.m.  Can you trace your family tree to someone who contributed to American independence in the American Revolutionary War? Have you ever wondered how to connect with other descendants of the Revolutionary era? Join us at this enlightening program. Lee McFadden, current Connecticut State Vice Regent of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, will speak about today’s DAR, “a diverse group of women from all age groups, ethnicities, religious affiliations and non-affiliations, rural regions, or city dwellers, dedicated to historic preservation, education, and patriotism with a strong focus on supporting veterans and members of our nation’s active military and their families.” Lee will also touch on the DAR application process and how to trace your Revolutionary ancestor.
Members of the local Nathan Hale Memorial Chapter of the DAR, based in East Haddam, will be available to answer questions and provide member applications for anyone who may be interested.
Space is limited, so please register in advance.

Summer Reading Kicks Off – Find Your Voice!

Our “regularly-scheduled” programs are winding down as we near the end of school, but never fear – the library invites you to Find Your Voice at this summer’s reading program.

We’ll kick off the first week with fun for all family members. No registration for Candyland, but please visit the Calendar on our website or call 860-663-2000 for programs that do require signups. Please note: Adults need to stay at the library per our Board policy, if their child is 12 years old or younger.

Saturday, June 24, 2023 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Life-Sized Candyland returns. Enter a land of storybook characters and enjoy a variety of games and fun. No registration necessary; just drop in.

Tuesday, June 27, 2023, 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Tiptoe Guide to Tracking Fairies. Families are invited to hear a story and learn how to track fairies. Following the tale, we’ll walk with Mrs. Fig in our outdoor garden with our hand-made nature frames to see if we have any magical guests living at the library. Then design your own fairy wings to wear, from items found in nature. and create a heart-shaped fairy wand. Then you’re good to go! Please register in advance.

Saturday, July 1, 2023 10:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m. Fairy Houses. Families are invited to hear Julie Ainsworth share a story about fairy houses. Then, head outside to collect natural materials on the edge of the library property, and build your own special home for magical visitors. Feel free to take a picture of yourself with your structure and know that it will be loved and appreciated by those who live in nature. Please register in advance.

The summer fun continues in July with: sign language classes for tweens through adults/seniors, coding with bots, thematic Little Learners, poetry with meditation and tai chi, Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center, Mohegan storytelling, Music with Margie, African drumming, and more. There are many ways to Find Your Voice, and we hope you’ll join us.
