Letter to the Editor: Sexual Assault Rally/Protest to be Held March 26, 2021

The views stated here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of the editors of this newspaper.

I am a currently a senior at Haddam-Killingworth High School and have recently been a victim of sexual assault. Many of my classmates and I have been coming forward with allegations of sexual assault and harassment that have taken place within our town. These events have had an almost explosive effect as we are realizing truly how many minors are victimized each year.

Unfortunately, Connecticut school systems and towns often are not dedicated to the awareness and education of sexual assault. In protest of this, hundreds of students and community members are calling out of school and taking the day off of work to attend a youth orchestrated event to raise awareness for this issue.

Friday March 26th at 9:00 a.m. and on, community members from Haddam and surrounding towns will be gathering in the center of Haddam to show support for victims and to raise a state-wide awareness that we are no longer tolerating these actions. As kids we are always encouraged to stand up for what we believe in and to stand by those we support loudly. Sexual assault awareness month begins April 1st. As youth and as victims, we are striving to make as big of an impact as possible and to show our support for victims state-wide.

Thank You,
Hannah Laird-Hoover
Senior at Haddam-Killingworth High School
