Letter to the Editor: Response to LTE about concentration of power

In response to a recent letter on H-K Now, the writer from Killingworth warned us to “be wary of having the same person in multiple positions of authority in Killingworth’s town government” in referring to the upcoming election.

He neglects to mention that there is a candidate for Board of Finance on the Killingworth Democratic slate that currently has positions on four town Boards or Committees.  These include the Board of Finance, Economic Recovery Commission, River Cog, and Chair of the Committee on Alternative Housing. Each committee holds a critical role in making key recommendations on spending taxpayer money. She is also Chair of the Democrat Town Committee and therefore responsible for making recommendation to the BOS for members of the Democrat Party, who will be appointed to other boards and commissions. More worrisome is that most of these are not elected, but rather appointed by the Board of Selectmen, so voters do not have the opportunity to prevent this concentration of power.

Therefore, we should be very wary of who is elected to Board of Finance and the concentration of power they would continue to hold over resident’s money.  Hopefully the next First Selectman will be a proponent for broader representation in town government.  This is clearly the abuse of power and concentration of authority that the writer warns against.
