Letter to the Editor: Cancer Research Must Continue Even Amid Pandemic

As the country continues to deal with the coronavirus pandemic, it’s important lawmakers and the public remember research into other diseases must also continue.  That’s why I recently took part in a virtual event where I met with Congressman Joe Courtney as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN).

During this meeting I made it clear that the people  of Connecticut are counting on our lawmakers to increase funding for cancer research and prevention.  I shared how, as a 12-year breast cancer survivor, I benefitted from cancer research.

With more than 600,000 Americans expected to die from cancer this year, including almost 6400 in Connecticut, now is not the time to take a break.  We are at a point where advancements in research are saving more lives than ever; and it’s critical that we keep this momentum going forward.

By increasing medical research funding at the National Institutes of Health by $3 billion, we can continue to make progress in the fight against cancer.

I encourage you to join us, giving us a stronger and louder voice in the fight against cancer.  Visit fightcancer.org to be connected to people like me in your community.
