Letter to the Editor: Applications for Absentee Ballots are Legal through Executive Order

The views stated here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of the editors of this newspaper.

To the Editors,
The last issue of Haddam Killingworth News featured a press release from “Fight Voter Fraud, Inc.” It stated the SOTS, Denise Merrill, is in legal violation of the constitution by sending out applications for absentee balloting.  Actually, through the legal process of an Executive Order, it was the Governor who determined that the unsafe conditions of the pandemic warranted the option of absentee balloting for the primary in August. There is no fraud or illegality involved in that.
Ms. Synkowicz is correct that neither the Governor nor the SOTS can change the state constitution. However, the General Assembly can vote to modify the statute governing absentee ballots for the November election and they will be meeting to consider that vote on July 21, 2020.
Thank you,
