Killingworth: Snow Emergency 2-1-2021; Property tax payment alert

By Cathy Iino, First Selectman, Killingworth.

(Jan. 31, 2021) A major winter storm is expected to arrive after midnight tonight. By mid-day on Monday, we expect the snow to start becoming heavy. Winds on Monday are expected to gust up to 55 mph, so power outages are possible.
Parking on roads is prohibited from midnight tonight until further notice. If your vehicle is parked in your driveway, make sure it is back from the road.
If we get the large amount snow that is forecast, beware of carbon monoxide poisoning. Make sure your heating system vents are not blocked. Operate generators outside, away from windows and vents; never operate them inside or in a partially enclosed space.
Under state law, January property tax bills are due by 4:00 pm, Monday, February 1. The town does not have the option to extend that deadline. However, if you have not yet paid your bill, I urge you to use a means of payment that does not require coming to Town Hall tomorrow:
  • Pay online. There is a link on the Tax Collector page on the town’s website
  • Pay by mail. If your envelope is postmarked by Monday, Feb. 1, it will be considered on time. Put it in the mail today!
  • Use the dropbox at Town Hall. You can leave your check either today or, if necessary, tomorrow morning before the snow gets heavy. Include a return envelope if you would like a receipt.
If worse comes to worst, don’t risk driving in dangerous conditions. We are currently operating under Executive Order 9R, which has temporarily reduced the interest rate on late taxes to 0.25% per month or fraction of a month. (Tax payments arriving late will be subject to interest dating back to the original due date of the bill, January 1.)
