Killingworth Copes: May 15, 2020

By Cathy Iino, Killingworth First Selectman.

Hello, Killingworth-
Because rates of infection with COVID-19 are falling throughout Connecticut, the state will be taking “baby steps” toward reopening starting on May 20. The trend lines are not down to zero, though, so please don’t stop following the guidelines to control the spread: keep your distance, wear a mask, wash your hands often, and avoid touching your face.
Memorial Day. Unfortunately, we will not be able to observe Memorial Day as we usually do, with a parade and a service. This year, we are putting together a short broadcast, with the help of Haddam-Killingworth High School, and we invite you to be a part of it.
If you would like to be included, please take a very short (less than 10 seconds) selfie video with your cell phone and email it to ciino@townofkillingworth.com this weekend.
  • Turn the phone horizontally.
  • Either ask someone with whom you are isolating to hold the phone about 2 feet away from you or hold the phone at arm’s length.
  • Allow a small amount of space above your head, but don’t look like you’re peaking over the bottom of the frame.
  • Say something in honor of those who have sacrificed for America. It can be as simple as, “Thank you, veterans” or “We remember those who gave their all for our freedom.”
  • Feel free to wear a uniform that you might have worn in the Memorial Day parade.
Please send your video in by Monday, so that we can get the broadcast ready in time for Memorial Day. Thanks!
Infrared thermometers for small businesses, nonprofits, and places of worship. The State of Connecticut, in partnership with the Connecticut Business and Industry Association, will distribute 50,000 infrared thermometers to support safe reopening activities amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Thermometers for those Killingworth organizations that request them will be delivered to the Town of Killingworth and distributed to you.
Small businesses with 2 to 100 employees and nonprofits can apply for one thermometer per physical address here. Places of worship can apply here.
This distribution will continue while supplies last.
Roadside clean-up. We have not been able to have our annual townwide clean-up day because of the coronavirus, but several people have suggested that we all spend a little time picking up trash from the roadsides near are homes. That is a lovely idea, in keeping with the generous spirit of Killingworth’s residents. Remember to take extra precautions: the pandemic is all the more reason to wear gloves when handling what you pick up.
Stay home, stay safe.
Cathy
