HVFCo Responds to Halloween 2019 Storm

By Olivia Drake, HVFC Public Information Officer.

Haddam Volunteer Fire Company responded to six consecutive calls for fallen utility lines during the Halloween 2019 storm.

At 11:10 p.m., crews were dispatched to Wiese Albert Road for an electrical fire on a utility pole; at 1:55 a.m. to Candlewood Hill Road for downed wires; at 2:30 a.m. to Bartman Road for another utility pole fire; and at 2:55 a.m. to Burr Road for wires down, and at 10:40 a.m. on Old Cart Road for another pole fire, and 12:30 p.m. at another location on Old Cart Road.

Members used fire apparatus to block roads and reroute traffic.

According to the Haddam Fire Marshal’s Office: “If you encounter a downed power line, DO NOT go near it. Power is always assumed to be live unless proven otherwise by Eversource. Lines can energize guardrails, fences and even the ground for great distances. Cable tv and phone lines can carry electricity as well. A safe distance is two-pole lengths away from the break.”
