Do you remember last year’s Holiday Pop Up Market held in the front room of the Shearmetrix Salon? Different local vendors with a variety of food, candles, and crafts? Well it will be back bigger and better this year thanks to Teri Everett and Janet Verney. This holiday season, it will be held in the All Purpose Room of the building formerly known as Haddam Elementary School.
“In order to get people, companies, or industries interested in our town, someone has to take the first step,” said Teri. “Who knows? If this is successful, maybe it could become a year round market expanding to include more vendors.” Last year, Teri had wanted to run the Pop-up Market, but couldn’t due to a variety of reasons, so Janet Verney took the reins. “With two of us [this year] it is a bit more manageable.”
“The holiday season is a great time of community,” said Teri. “We have many talented and enterprising individuals who want to sell their products, homemade and direct sales. This forum allows these individuals, men and women alike, to get their products out to the community but not taking away from those who have full time jobs.”
“I’m thrilled to be part of this year’s Holiday Pop-Up Market in our new expanded location, HES in Higganum,” said Janet. “When I was looking for options to house this year’s market, I knew it could grow, so I looked for a bigger space and was pleased to discover HES had a multipurpose room that would allow us to triple the size. We have many returning vendors and many new! The response has been incredible and we already have begun a vendor waiting list. We also offer a table for workshops and demos, which must be reserved on a first come, first served basis. Be sure to visit us at the market and shop and support local.”
Deb Thomas, who participated last year, and is participating again this year, said, “It’s all possible due to the dedication of friends, Janet Verney and Teri Everett — wanting to bring local crafts people and other vendors together, to deliver some vitality, joy, and Holiday Spirit into play for the town, and the desire to once again, utilize space which otherwise would lie dormant. This also drives home the most important point, I believe, that shopping local is best, because Amazon doesn’t support your child’s baseball team.”
Opening day will be Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On that day, from 12:30-5:00 p.m., the HK Relay for Life will be at the Market with a display and information on this popular annual event. Ed Yantosh will be manning the booth. Teri is a member of the Relay Team “The Pink Ladies” who are all breast cancer survivors. “We will be looking to get more teams by getting the word and information out sooner,” said Teri. “Relay helps many in our town. Not just those going through cancer, but caregivers too.”
They will be planning a few special days this year during the Pop-Up Market: a spa day for the ladies, a men’s shopping night, a children’s workshop. There will be demonstrations and workshops from a few vendors, as well.
Vendors will include:
- Barbara Galpin, The Pyrex Lady and vintage jewelry
- Holiday Hose Creations craft and themed jewelry

Vendors are excited to be a part of this unique opportunity in Higganum. “The Woman On The Edge has been busy,” said Deb Thomas. “This year, in addition to one of a kind wearables (neck warmers, wrist warmers and nose warmers!-yes, nose warmers!) I’ve brought back the ‘granny square’ but, these aren’t your Grandmother’s granny squares. I’ve added some fun things for younger people too; hair sticks, magic wands, and wish makers among others. And….wait ’til you see the Mucket inspired bags…”
“I’m very excited to be a part of the Higganum Pop up Market again this year!” said Lindsay Wolfradt of Foxglove Soaps. “It’s great to see how much it has grown since last year. Looking forward to seeing all the local support from this amazing community.”
